Discussion Post

Step 1: Please read Modules 13-16 in your textbook and review all materials provided in the Content module for this week.

Step 2: Watch the discussion video The Developing Child.

Step 3: Write 2 posts by clicking the link at the top of the page.

Posting Instructions:

The first post is due Thursday by 11:59 PM (6 points). It will be based on your responses after you have reviewed ALL assigned materials, and will be composed of 2-3 paragraphs (600 word minimum) that answer the following questions:

  1. Choose one of your primary caregivers for the purposes of this discussion.
  2. Identify the parenting style(s) that person used based on the four styles proposed by Diana Baumrind (i.e., authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and/or uninvolved). Remember that your chosen primary caregiver may have had a mix of parenting styles. Start by defining the style(s) you have identified for that individual. Next, use the defining characteristics to analyze your experiences with that individual that made you select a specific parenting style(s). That is, you should match the specifics of your example to the defining characteristics of one or more parenting styles.
  3. Identify the type of attachment you had with that primary caregiver based on the four styles proposed by Mary Ainsworth (i.e., secure, insecure, avoidant, and/or ambivalent disorganized). Start by defining the type of attachment. Next, use the defining characteristics to analyze your experiences that made you select a particular form of attachment. That is, you should match the specifics of your example to the defining characteristics of that type of attachment.”
  4. Respond to the three points below to discuss the developmental outcomes of the parenting style and type of attachment you experienced in terms of how well they prepared you to function within your current social/cultural context. Here you will be commenting on the cultural appropriateness of these parenting styles and types of attachment.
    1. What were your developmental outcomes associated with the parenting style and type of attachment you experienced?
    2. How were these developmental outcomes (in)appropriate in terms of your own development within your social/cultural context?
    3. If another person had the same experiences and developmental outcomes that you had, but in a different social/cultural context, do you think their relative appropriateness would be universal? That is, do you think different parenting styles and/or types of attachment would produce more or less appropriate developmental outcomes across different cultural contexts?
  5. Describe one topic you liked the most from this video. What was the importance of this topic and its application to real life situations?

You need to watch the film “The Day It Snowed in Miami” to further your understanding of local ordinances that impact public policy and understand some of the issues associated with the LGBT movement. You will write your response to this film in a written assignment. (Response Paper: The Day It Snowed in Miami).

I worked on this project for several years before it premiered in 2014. This documentary tells the story of how a local ordinance to protect the LGBT community came into being. In other words, how the local social policy was created in Miami to protect people and establish a protective policy. This project was a labor of love for me.

Here is the link to watch the film:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seYFHXnCSo0 (Links to an external site.)

I have attached some questions to facilitate your knowledge of these issues. I encourage you to post your comments and questions on the discussion board, and you can integrate this knowledge into your response paper.

Summary of Key Events

January 18, 1977

Dade County Commission.

Ruth Shack introduces an ordinance to protect people based on “affectional or sexual preferences.”

June 7, 1977

Repeal by voters

69% Repeal

31% Affirm

Repealed the ordinance by a significant margin to protect the gay community

December 3, 1998

Ordinance Passed

7-6 Vote

Protects people based on sexual orientation

December 2, 2015

Ordinance Passed

8-3 Vote

Protects people based on gender identity and expression

Homosexuality was illegal in the State of Florida – and there was significant discrimination against the LGBT community. One example of this discrimination was the Johns’ Committee. Educational outreach was done in the schools as well. What did you think of Detective John Sorenson of the Dade County Morals Squad (1965) talking to the high school students? What do you think the climate was like for LGBT students and teachers?

On January 18, 1977, Ruth Shack led an ordinance to protect people based on their “affectional or sexual preferences?” This ordinance passed on a vote of 5 to 3 in favor of supporting the gay community. This human rights ordinance was not the first law in the country to protect the gay community. It appeared to be an evolving trend to expand the civil rights movement to include protections for people. Why do you think this language was selected?

  • State Law prohibited unnatural or lascivious sexual conduct
  • Penal law could punish conduct
  • Preference was protected by the first amendment

The initial ordinance passed on January 18, 1977. Did hell freeze over? What happened on the next day in Miami?

Anita Bryant and her coalition formed an organization to “Save Our Children.” How was Ruth Shack related to Ms. Bryant? How would you describe their relationship?

Anita Bryant led this charge in Miami, and she took her message across the country. The “culture wars” were arming their camps, and the “Christian Coalition” appeared to be fighting the more liberal perspective in society. Who was Gilbert Baker? Harvey Milk? Was the boycott of Florida Orange Juice effective?

In 1980 the city was changed rapidly by the Mariel boatlift, and in 1981, a mysterious disease surfaced that disproportionately impacted gay man. How did the Mariel Boatlift impact immigration for LGBT individuals? Who was Pedro Zamora, and why does his story have a significant impact on Miami’s history? Did AIDS derail the focus on civil rights? How did AIDS impact the LGBT struggle?

The LGBT rights campaign continued, but a singular focus could not be maintained. Scientific progress toward HIV was made, and people were living longer. By 1993, SAVE, or Safeguarding American Values for Everyone, was established to focus on LGBT issues broader than AIDS. Why do you think the name was selected? What did this group accomplish by 1998? By 2015?

By 1996, the new HIV medications changed everything related to survival, and other efforts became a focus of the LGBT community.

The Human Rights Ordinance protecting the gay and lesbian community passed in 1998. It did not cover the transgender members of the community. A strategic focus on the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual communities were made at the transgender community’s expense. Was this a good idea? Should they have fought to include the “T” in the LGBT in the original ordinance?

What did you learn about Miami and the LGBT community from this film? How can this be applied to your perspective? What do you think about social movements in light of this film?

Bonus: Music has played a role in social movements. One such song isDon’t Drink the Orange Juice (Links to an external site.)

Who was Rod McKuen? (google his name and explore)

Purpose: Further develop your analysis of your chosen short story with a focus on the importance of characterization.

Part 1. Choose a character from one of the short stories in this unit by Roanhorse, Liu, or Rash. Name the character and briefly describe them, considering the following elements:

  • What they are like–how are they described?
  • What we know about their past and present? Consider their relationships, their environment, their position in society, and their culture.
  • What do they want? What are their dreams and goals? What do they fear? What drives them?
  • What do they do? Why? What do we see in the story itself, and what can we infer about them from their behavior?
  • What do they say? What do they leave unsaid? Why?
  • What conflicts do they face–both internal and external–and how do they address these conflicts?

Part 2. Consider how taking the approach of psychoanalytic criticism–focusing on the mind, unconscious motives, and the roots of desire–can enhance our analysis of a short story. Feel free to consult the readings from Mary Klages or Michael Ryan on psychoanalytic criticism to help you make these connections.

Part 3. Taking into account all of the above, and reading the Building a Strong Thesis Statement page for guidance, craft a working thesis for your Unit 3 Essay and include it in bold at the end of your post. This is your opportunity to check your progress towards that essay and get feedback at a critical juncture. The thesis should focus on why and how your chosen story from this unit uses specific symbols, metaphors, uses of irony, or characters to depict one of the themes from Unit 1 (Love, Alienation/Otherness, the American Dream/Nightmare, Quest for Identity/Coming of Age, or Conformity/Rebellion) in a particular way.

Part 4. Respond to at least 2 of your classmates’ posts. Your initial post should meet all requirements, and your replies should be thoughtful and substantive.

Grading Criteria:

  • Your responses to the first 2 question(s) are substantial and thoughtful.
  • You’ve explored how your story might relate to one of our literary theories.
  • Your peer responses are substantive and thoughtful and advance the discussion by introducing new insights or perspectives, and/or significantly deepening or broadening the conversation with questions (Avoid generalized comments such as “good post” or “I agree”).
  • Your use of language: your writing should be clear, well-organized, and free from spelling and grammar errors. Any quoted material is integrated logically and grammatically and clearly signaled with appropriate MLA citation. The post represents your original thinking unless otherwise indicated
  • The short story I Chose is:

This week you will put together your 72-hour disaster home “go bag” and evaluate your preparedness.

Here are the steps for your initial post:

1. Use the lists available at the Ready.gov website (Links to an external site.), FEMA (Links to an external site.), or the Red Cross website (Links to an external site.) to gather items for your 72-hour home go bag. Add additional items that you think will be useful and essential for your family. (You are not required to purchase items, but you may if you choose.)

2. Post a picture of all of the items you have gathered for your go bag. Make sure your name is included somewhere in the picture (you can write your name on a piece of paper and include that in the picture, or add your student ID badge). For the sake of personal and family privacy, keep personal/private items out of the photograph; you may list them (e.g., prescription medications).

  • You must take and submit a picture of your own items! You may not post a picture from the internet or any other source.

Along with your photo, include the following information:

  • A discussion of the items in your home go bag – what is present and what is missing.
  • A brief explanation of the demographic considerations and potential disaster hazards in your area and why you included certain items.
  • Your family, pets, and living situation considerations and why you included certain items.
  • Are you prepared to help others in your community in the event of a disaster?

Support your answers with evidence from scholarly sources.

In your replies to peers, you may:

  • Make suggestions for items to add or additional go bag ideas for children, pets, etc.
  • Share ideas for cost-effective ways to add items.
  • Ask questions about why some items are included, if it was not explained in the post.
  • Share additional websites and preparedness lists.

Example: “I felt it was interesting that you chose to include a fishing pole. What else would you need to include to assure the proper use of this tool? This is a resource that may not be useful to everyone but in our area, we could benefit from this important tool. According to Veneema…”

the items I will have in the picture will be.. a flashlight …charger….lighter….towels….extra clothes… battery …..first aid…canned food…sanitary items like alcohol, soap…water..

Note: It is imperative that you follow the instructions for the discussion post achieve the maximum points!

There are several tools used to assess cognitive function in the outpatient and inpatient setting. Identify an assessment tool used for cognitive function, for example tools used to evaluate dementia, depression, or delirium. Some examples of assessment tools used in your text book are the Mini-Mental State Exam-2 (MMSE-2), Confusion Assessment Method (CAM), Geriatric Depression Scale, and the NEECHAM Confusion Scale. Select an assessment tool used in the older adult population used to assess cognitive disorders. Chapter 29 in your text covers neurocognitive disorders and assessment tools used in older adults. Read the Grading Rubric for discussion post for criteria!!!

1. In this discussion identify the importance of cognitive assessment tools for evaluating clinical disorders in older adults (dementia, delirium, depression, Alzheimers).

2. Discuss the purpose and features of the tool and how the tool is used to assess a disorder of cognition in older patients.

3. Please address what disorders the tools are used to assess and the advantages of the intervention for nursing practice. Please use evidence-based literature to support your work and cite your sources (you can use your textbook as one of your references).

This assignment should be no less than 5 paragraphs. APA format and sentence structure will be evaluated in the discussion. Please use formal and structured writing. Try to make sure your discussion forum applies to the older adult.

This link below provides an excellent guide to the most updated APA in-text and reference citations.

Please ensure that you use complete sentence structure and site sources appropriately. Read over your work and proof read before submitting your assignment. I will be evaluating your assignment with this criteria. Also, do not forget to respond to TWO separate classmates post, this is apart of your grade.

A right-to-work state is described as a state in which employees may organize to form a labor union but cannot be fired if they refuse to join the union. If you were offered a position at an employer in a right-to-work state, would you join the labor union? Be sure to support your response with the advantages or disadvantages of joining or not joining that labor union.
