The origins of “modern” art are usually drawn to the mid-19th century. Why do you think this is the case? What do you see as some of the ways the mid-19th century serves as a break in terms of visual production? There are also many different ways to think about the definition of art as it grew to encompass a variety of different forms and subjects. Do you think this is a logical outcome of what had come before, or do you see the development of modernity as a complete break with tradition?
